Cuyamaca Peak in Cleveland National Forest_f0308721_12223572.jpg
These white trees look like they are trees covered with rime but these are trees that were actually burned in a forest fire. The beauty seemed like a miracle to me.

Cuyamaca Peak in Cleveland National Forest_f0308721_12241353.jpgI went to the Sunset Trail / Big Laguna Loop last fall. The lovely meadows, forests and lakes south Cleveland National Forest inspired me. Therefore, I decided to go to Cuyamaca Peak of the same mountain range in Cleveland National Forest. Cuyamaca Peak is in the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park which is located northeast of San Diego.
From Los Angeles、takes southward on FW15 and to continue from California State Road(SR) 78 to 79 . And the travel time is about 4 hours. California SR 78 and 79 are lovely country roads. It is like "Take me home, country roads" by John Denver. Let me introduce the way up to the Cuyamaca Rancho SP a little bit because it is fun for driving. California SR 78 goes through sweeping pastures and mountain scenery. SR79 and 78 intersect in a small town, Julian. Go south with 79 after passing the downtown area of Julian.

LA(Los Angeles)からは4時間、OC(Orang County)からは3時間くらいみておこう。 060.gif “Take me home, country roads” 060.gif

California SR 79 has a part of prairie which looks like a red carpet.

Lake Cuyamaca is visible on the left side of the road immediately after descending downhill.

056.gif

There is a Paso Picacho campground in the Cuyamaca Rancho SP on the right side of the road at about two miles from Lake Cuyamaca. This campground has a trailhead to Cuyamaca Peak. The entrance fee (parking fee) is $ 8 for day use.

065.gif

Paso Picacho campground is a huge campground, which may look like it's suitable to use the whole mountain for camping. Azalea Glen Loop Trail starts from the path with a fence that is between the campsite and parking.

Cuyamaca Peak in Cleveland National Forest_f0308721_1228910.jpgThere are multiple trails around the campground. The trails can fit to suit one's own purpose or physical condition.
I have chosen the course of Azalea Glen going to the intersection of the Azalea Spring Fire Road, turn left. Once you reach the intersection of the Lookout Fire Road, turn right to reach the top of Cuyamaca Peak.
For going back, I will come across an intersection in Conejos Trail and I have to turn left. Upon reaching the intersection of the Azalea Spring Fire Road, turn left again. I will reach the Milk Ranch Road intersection, this time I have to turn right and walk until I reach the parking.
In addition, the roundtrip trail of the Lookout Fire Road is the shortest course if your purpose is just for hunting Cuyamaca Peak.

The Azalea Glen branches out to two trails: the left trail, which is the Azalea Glen Trail and the right one leading to Paso Picacho Nature Trail, which has a short course. I took the left trail.

Walking along the trail, the Stonewall Peak can be seen towering over California SR
79. Stonewall Peak is the most popular hiking destination in the area.

Due to the Cedar Fire in October 2003, all terrains on this mountain are now changed for decades to come. Trees that were burnt in the fire were cut down. The forest, once thick with cedar, fir, pine and oak, is gone.

These trees look like the trees in a cold winter, but actually these trees were burnt in the fire.

The trail leads into the woods through the small meadows. The prairie grasses are white in winter.

In the forest, the trail passes through among the tall woods along a small creek. Young fir and pine trees are growing up beneath burned black trees. This is what we call the power and magic of nature!

045.gif

The picture above shows a typical section along the Azalea Glen Trail. Ten years ago, this area was darkly shaded by dense woods, but now, it is completely exposed to the sun.
A decade of recovery has allowed the underbrush to burgeon; it is now impenetrable. There are signs that the forest will recover, but it will take decades.

After an hour and a half walking along the trail, I finally arrived at the Azalea Spring close to the fork of Spring Fire Road.

This is the Azalea Spring. Apparently, it was named after the name of the place. Unfortunately, it is not suitable for drinking.

I decided to go to Cuyamaca Peak taking the Spring Fire Road.

After walking half a mile, Spring Fire Road joins the paved road Lookout Fire Road, which is also the road for bikers. I do not like walking on the pavement trail, even though it’s easier to walk there.

Cuyamaca Peak in Cleveland National Forest_f0308721_12425774.jpgLookout Fire Road is almost exposed to the sun, however tall trees appear as climb the elevation gradually. I felt relieved when I looked at the green trees because the burned trees made me sad.

I was very tired because the elevation reached 6,500 feet /2,000m surrounding the peak.
There is a spot of outlook with bench just before the summit. It is less than 20 minutes to get the summit from here!

042.gif

I got at the top of Cuyamaca Peak, the second highest peak in San Diego County at 6512 feet.

Once at the top, the view sometimes reaches all the way to Mexico in the south, to the Pacific in the west, to the deserts in the east, and Palomar Mountain in the north on clear days. This is southwest view of the peak.

After enjoying the view of the summit, get back via Conejos Trail.

The Conejos Trail is an open land with few burned trees, making the trail exposed to the sun and allowing us to see the east side at all times. A giant tree is still standing despite of burning down completely.

The trail goes through shrubs of same high and breed. I guess that those trees were planted.

Conejos Trail joins the Spring Fire Road. It is safe to head to south by turning right here, and travel into Azalea Glen. However, I headed to north by turning left.

004.gif

Spring Fire Road joins an intersection where Milk Ranch Road extends to east and Black Oak Trail Loop goes northward from here. I headed east following Milk Ranch Road which has a wide trail.

In about half mile on Milk Ranch Road from the intersection, go down into meadows on the right side.
There is no trail there. But to head to direction of the parking lot, you should look for a track. There are some tracks in the meadow, but it is not so clear.

034.gif

I encountered a flock of large wild birds in the meadow. I was not sure what kind of birds they are, maybe turkey?
You can join the first fork of the Azalea Glen if you cross over the meadow and go south along the small creek.

My rating for this trail : 5★. Everything is good except the pavement trail of middle section.
Distance: 8miles/13km round trip. Elevation Gain: 1700ft/520m (Moderate)
Time to Complete Hike: 5 hours (including break time).

056.gif
全行程8 miles/13km, 高低差1700ft/520m, 5時間(休憩込み)
